The journey of the company started in 1995 as Sona Okegawa Precision Forgings, which was a 75:25 joint venture between the Sona Group and Mitsubishi Materials and the pioneer of the technology of warm forged near net-shaped gears. The Sona Group, after acquiring Thyssen Krupp’s forging business (which acquired BLW, the inventor of warm forging) and 25% stake of Mitsubishi, renamed the company to Sona BLW Precision Forgings, which became the largest manufacturer of forged gears. In 2019, Sona BLW acquired Comstar Automotive, a leading designer and manufacturer of starting and charging systems for automobiles, and created a new identity - Sona Comstar. The company has two businesses:
Driveline Business: It produces precision-forged bevel gears and differential assemblies for passenger, commercial and off-highway vehicles. It is a technology leader in its field with a major presence in the Indian market and overseas markets in Canada, USA, Europe, and China. Presently it has 6 manufacturing plants spread across Gurgaon (4) and Pune (2) and an R&D center in Gurgaon.
Electrical Business: It produces starter motors, alternators, BLDC motors and 48V BSG for application in passenger and light commercial vehicles. With more than 90% exports, it has a presence in the USA, Mexico, Brazil, Europe, South Africa, China, and India. Presently it has 4 manufacturing plants spread across Chennai, India (1), Tecumseh, US (1), Irapuato, Mexico (1), and Hangzhou, China (1) and an R&D center in Chennai.
