EMCBS is a modular braking system developed for its use in 3-Phase Electric Locomotive (EMCBS), suitable for application and release of train brake and locomotive brakes in accordance with a graduated release twin-pipe air brake system. Its LRU line replaceable intelligent modules are connected to the local network function together in conjunction with the locomotive control computer (VCU) to achieve the desired brake functionality. The system has the following major parts:

Emergency Exhaust Valve

  • Mechanically exhausts the Brake Pipe pressure whenever the Loco pilot applies Emergency Brake from the Auto Handle (A9) of the Driver Brake Controller.

Auto Drain Valve

  • Automatically drains the moisture accumulated in the locomotive Main Reservoir.

Unloader Valve

  • Provided at each Main Compressor line installed under the locomotive, between the Compressor and MR Reservoir.
  • Vents the pressure between the Compressor and Check Valve line during compressor start-up.
  • Enables the compressor to start without any back pressure.

Driver Brake Controller

The Brake Controller communicates handle movements to the Air Brake System via the local network to apply or release brakes of the Loco, Rake formation, or both.

Brake Controller consists of the following main components:

  • • Auto Brake Handle (A9)
  • • Ind Brake Handle (SA9)
  • • Cab Selector Switch
  • • LCD Display

Driver Back-up Valve

  • Back-Up Valve pneumatically controls the train brake.
  • Used in case of electronics failure.
  • Enables train operation at restricted speed during electronic system failure.
Salient Features
  • • Handle position displayed live on the LCD display.
  • • Fault codes displayed on the LCD display for ease of diagnostics.
  • • Ingress Protection level: IP64.
  • • Electronic Control Unit (ECU) consisting of Brake Control Electronics and Vigilance Control device
  • • Auxiliary Control Unit
  • • Brake Control Unit with Header for pneumatic connections
  • • Driver’s Brake Controller with diagnostics display
  • • Driver Back-up valve
