Sunjay J Kapur served as the Chairman of Sona Comstar, one of the global leaders in mobility technology, and was a transformative figure in India’s automotive landscape. Mr. Kapur’s leadership was marked by strategic foresight, global expansion, and an unwavering commitment to innovation and sustainability.
He joined Sona BLW Precision Forgings Limited as Director in 2006. In 2015, Mr. Kapur assumed the role of Managing Director following the passing of his father and the Company's founder, Dr. Surinder Kapur. At a time when the Company was navigating significant financial challenges, he led its turnaround by stabilizing finances, expanding export business, and transforming its product portfolio from conventional differential gears to integrated electric vehicle driveline solutions. His strategic partnership with Blackstone enabled the acquisition of Comstar’s motor capabilities, laying the foundation for electrification and giving rise to the Company’s new identity – Sona Comstar. Mr. Kapur was instrumental in pivoting the company toward electric vehicle components, positioning Sona Comstar as a forward-looking player in the global auto components industry.
As Chairman of Sona Comstar from 2019 onward, Mr. Kapur continued to guide the company’s strategic direction. Under his chairmanship, Sona Comstar expanded its global footprint across India, the USA, Mexico, China, and Serbia, successfully listed on BSE Ltd. and the National Stock Exchange of India Ltd., and entered future mobility domains such as sensors and software through the acquisition of a majority stake in Novelic. He also supported the Company’s diversification into sustainable mobility beyond automotive with the acquisition of the railway business from Escorts Kubota Limited. His emphasis on purposeful growth, sustainability, technological excellence, and exemplary governance helped the Company navigate its journey towards its vision of becoming one of the world’s most respected and valuable mobility technology companies for its customers, employees, and shareholders.
Mr. Kapur believed deeply in the power of business to uplift communities. Under his chairmanship, Sona Comstar actively contributed to society through a wide range of CSR programs focused on environmental stewardship, inclusive education, healthcare access, gender equality, and skill development.
Beyond corporate leadership, Mr. Kapur was a respected voice in shaping India’s manufacturing and automotive policies. He held numerous influential positions, including President of Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA), Chairman of CII Northern Region, Co-Chair of CII National Council of Manufacturing, Chair of CII Europe Committee and Member of CII Trade Policy Council, CII-VLFM Governing Board, and several other strategic bodies.
His contributions extended to education and entrepreneurship. He served on the Board of Governors of The Doon School and the Advisory Council of the Munjal Institute for Global Manufacturing. As Global Chairman of Entrepreneurs’ Organization (2007–08), he was the first Indian to hold this prestigious position.
A sports enthusiast and accomplished polo player, Mr. Kapur founded and captained the Aureus Polo team, which won championships across India, the USA, and the UK. His love for sports and mentorship reflected his belief in holistic leadership and personal excellence.
Mr. Kapur’s legacy is one of bold vision, deep relationships, and enduring impact. As Chairman Emeritus, his spirit will continue to inspire the Sona Comstar family and the broader industry he helped shape.
