Electric panels in 3‑phase locomotives are highly sophisticated systems designed to manage traction power, auxiliary loads, and safety functions. They consist of high‑voltage panels, control cubicles and filter cubicles to ensure reliable operation under demanding railway conditions. The Electric Panel comprises Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs), relays, contactors, terminal blocks and cables, providing protection and control for the operation of compressors, motors, fans, lighting systems, doors, braking systems, traction systems, Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV), Fire Detection Systems (FDS) and other related accessories.

Key Features of Electric Panels in 3‑Phase Locomotives

High Voltage Panel (HB1 & HB2)

  • • Handles auxiliary circuits (lighting, fans, pumps)
  • • Provides simplified power distribution across locomotive subsystems
  • • Includes switches and contactors for overload protection

Control Cubicles (SB1 & SB2)

  • • Interface between driver's desk and locomotive systems
  • • Controls pantograph, traction converter and auxiliary converter

Filter Cubicle

  • • Equipped with surge arresters, capacitors, and current sensors
  • • Suppresses high‑frequency harmonics from the main transformer
  • • Improves power quality and protects sensitive electronics

High Voltage (HV) Cubicle

Typically mounted under-slung or in segregated cabinets, this unit handles high-input voltages and transformer connections.
  • Disconnecting and Earthing Device: Used to safely isolate the coach from the 750V / 415V train line.
  • Fuses & Contactors: High-voltage fuses and heavy-duty feeder selection contactors (K01/K02).
  • Pump/Anti-Skid Controllers: Terminals for the coach pump controller and anti-skid devices.

Low Voltage (LV) Cubicle

Usually an onboard cabinet responsible for stepping down and distributing power to onboard utilities.
  • Feeder Selection Switches: Rotary switches to manually select between different power lines.
  • Lighting and Fan Circuits: MCBs and switchgear for passenger compartment lights, BLDC carriage fans, and mobile charging sockets.

Passenger Coaches-Amrit Bharat

Non-AC Coaches

The electric panels for non-AC coaches in Amrit Bharat are built to handle train lighting and auxiliary loads efficiently, with robust safety features like fuses, switchboards, and earthing systems.

Key Features of Electric Panels (Non-AC Coaches)

Amrit Bharat Non-AC Coaches

  • Simplified Power Distribution: Designed for conventional railway-style coaches with basic train lighting and fans.
  • Fuse & Switchgear Protection: Basic fuse boxes for overload protection.
  • Lighting: LED-based train lighting, emergency lights, lavatory lights, and night lamps.
  • Cost Efficiency: Panels are simpler, making them easier to maintain and cheaper to operate.
